Meredith Gaudreau is keeping her late husband Johnny Gaudreau’s legacy alive in her three children.
After Johnny and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, tragically died in late August 2024 when an allegedly drunk driver crashed into them while they were biking, Meredith shared that she was pregnant with the couple’s third child at Johnny’s funeral.
But during a Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce podcast appearance, Meredith shared that Johnny knew about the pregnancy a week before his death, detailing how she told the late hockey player the news.
“I think I was only in my seventh week,” Meredith recalled, sharing that the family were attending a close friend’s wedding at the time.
It was Johnny’s brother, Matthew, who seemed suspicious at first.
“Matty at the rehearsal dinner was sitting across from me, and I was like fake drinking beer. And he kept looking at me and I was like, I have a 5-month-old. I’m not pregnant, Matty.”

Johnny and Matthew’s sister, Katie, was preparing for her own wedding, telling Meredith she didn’t want her to be pregnant at her wedding. (Johnny and Matthew died the day before Katie’s wedding.)
Katie told her brothers that Meredith had said she’d gotten her period the week prior.
“Quiet John is sitting there. And then we were walking to our car and he was like, ‘You just lied to Katie.’ He’s like, ‘You didn’t have your period last week.’ And I was like, ‘I know.’ ”
Meredith said the pregnancy was “such a shock to both of us,” adding, “I wanted to tell him in a way cooler way than that, but I was like, ’Your siblings were all over me!’ ”
As for Johnny’s reaction, Meredith said her NHL star husband was in shock, jokingly asking her, “Are you insane?”
“He was like, ‘Three kids? Like, this is insane.’ He’s like, ‘I’m excited. I’m really nervous, though,’ ” she added, noting that she still has text messages from her late husband giving his candid reaction to the news.
“The next day he was skating, and he was like, ‘I can’t focus on this skate. I can’t believe we’re having a third baby,’ ” Meredith recalled. “I think I had 20, like a stream of consciousness, 20 text messages from him being like, ‘I’m so excited. I’m so nervous. Like, I can’t believe this. You’re crazy.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, this is crazy.’ ”

And while Meredith shared that her husband only knew about the pregnancy for about a week before his death, she knew he was a fan of the name Carter, which she ultimately named her son.
“I also knew he always liked the name Carter. We didn’t obviously know the gender,” she explained. “We never found out the gender of our kids. But we had a list of names we liked … So I’m excited to tell Carter one day, ‘He really loved your name.’ ”

Meredith and Johnny also shared daughter Noa, 3, and son Johnny, 2. The widow shared the news that she and her late husband were expected a third child during his funeral in September 2024.
“John and I had the best six months as a family of four. These will forever be the best six months of my life,” Meredith said, according to ABC News. “There’s specifically one week that I will cherish forever — it will be my favorite week of my life out of those six months. We’re actually a family of five. I’m in my ninth week of pregnancy with our third baby.”
