Legendary actor and martial artist Chuck Norris died Thursday, just days after celebrating his 86th birthday. The actor’s family confirmed the news of his “sudden passing” in a statement on Friday morning.

Norris appeared in more than 20 movies and in 1993, he took on his most famed role, as a crime-fighting lawman in TV’s “Walker, Texas Ranger.” The show ran for nine seasons.

What happened to Chuck Norris?

An official cause of death has not been publicly released, as of Friday morning.

Norris had reportedly been hospitalized in Hawaii after experiencing a medical emergency in the days leading up to his death, according to TMZ. The outlet reported that his hospitalization seemed abrupt because a source who spoke with Norris on Wednesday said “he had been working out and in an upbeat, jovial mood.”

As soon as the report about Norris’s hospitalization emerged, fans re-shared reports stating that the actor had suffered two heart attacks in 2017. It is unclear if the 86-year-old had a Myocardial infarction.

His family on Friday described the actor’s death as “sudden.”

“While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace,” his family’s statement said. “We know many of you had heard about his recent hospitalization, and we are truly grateful for the prayers and support you sent his way. As we grieve this loss, we kindly ask for privacy for our family during this time.”

The actor’s passing came just days after he celebrated his 86th birthday on March 10. To mark the birthday, he posted a social media video of himself sparring with a physical trainer, writing that he was grateful for “another year, good health and the chance to keep doing what I love.”

Norris rose to fame after appearing opposite Bruce Lee in the 1972 film “The Way of the Dragon” and went on to become a major action star throughout the 1980s.
